For the average commuter in Phoenix, when the time comes for you to get an oil change, you typically want two things: to have it done fast, and for a decent price. While any mechanic or auto shop in Phoenix worth its salt should be able to check both of these boxes, what we feel is the mark of some of the best mechanics in Phoenix is when your mechanic doesn’t try to nickel and dime you on petty services or try to take advantage of you altogether.
What to be skeptical of when you get your oil changed
If your mechanic tells you that you’re low on halogen headlight fluid or brake light fluid, they’re trying to take advantage of you. With the advent of Yelp! and Google Reviews (please leave us a review, by the way!) it’s pretty difficult for quick-lube oil change places to be able to pull these scams on unwitting motorists anymore, but there are still plenty tricks in the book that shadier auto repair shops and even dealership maintenance technicians might try to promote.
“Magic snake oils” are always something to be skeptical about, along with “3-part” fuel system services when it’s likely that all they’re doing is using a can of Sea Foam or Techron concentrate in your fuel tank. These are also both things that many can take care of themselves and that can sometimes help your car run a little smoother.
Make sure that when they do recommend other services along with your oil change, they also have the correct parts or replacement items being recommended. If they recommend that you need new shocks when your car only uses struts, for example, this can be a sign that they didn’t examine the condition of your vehicle’s setup and instead made the judgment based on your car’s mileage without knowing its prior service history, or even worse — based on your gender or appearance.
These are the kind of mechanics you should run from, and we’re happy to say is far from how we operate our business at The Auto Shop.
As a matter of fact, any time you may have a question about the practices of your current mechanic or would like to get more information for your business’ fleet maintenance program, we’re always happy to help.
